activities for the kids
Join us on
This page is for all the parents and grandparents out there who may have run out of ideas of what to do with the kids. All these ideas have been sent in by Daisy Baby members and we would love if you could add to this. If you have a fun activity please send it through to bex@daisybaby.co.nz . I have split the activities into either inside or outside. Thanks to everyone who has sent through ideas so far! Inside
- If it's raining and we've been stuck inside we get the bean bags, cushions, couch cushions and put them all on the floor and jump, roll around and generally have a blast on them. So much fun. Then make popcorn and sit in the middle of them all and feast. :) - sent in by Jo.
- Learning about colours. Takes a bit of preperation! In three icecube trays make up coloured ice cubes (water and food colouring) make up the three primary colours blue, red, yellow. Freeze. When frozen turn them out into bowls for the kids and give them some plastic glasses. Put some water in the glasses ans add two different coloured ice cubes - mix with a spoon. let the kids expreiment with the colours - the will be making up secondary colours! Blue and yellow = green. red and blue = purple and yellow and red = orange. If you are really keen you can make up all 6 colours and let older children learn about tertiary colours! Great Fun experiment to do at home! - sent in by Louise
- The easiest play dough recipie EVER! 4 cups plain flour 1cup salt - mix together and make a well in the middle - Add 1/2 cup oli and 2 cups of hot water (from tap) add food colouring or paint colour of your choice. Mix in well. Turn out and knead well. Voila Play dough! - sent in by Louise
- Puff paint - Equal parts tempra paint, flour and salt then add water to mix, needs to be quite thick. Dribble, paint, spoon onto card then microwave for 15 seconds! very cool art! - sent in by Louise
- For a inside idea, set up a path of pillows that the kids jump from pillow to pillow, they can hop like a frog, leap like a tiger etc etc.... - sent in by Marion
- Set up a baby bath of water and toys or a tub of water and toys and let them play (for like 2 years and above), baking and letting them mix, using a hula hoop let them jump in and out, crawling through, rolling the hoop and chasing - sent in by Vanessa
- Water play is great. I put food colouring in two jugs of water, one blue, one yellow and my son thought it was great mixing the colours together to make green - he said he was making recipes. :) - sent in by Ceara

I have used empty formula tins for drums.... lightly sand the outside and paint them and add stickers to decorate if you like. The bottom metal end makes a great loud banging noise and the other end with the plastic lid makes a more hollow sound. My 10 month old uses all sorts of objects to bang the drums, from his hands to his plastic hammer to kitchen utensils. Put on some music and start your own band. Great fun!!!! - sent in by Shay

I get a couple of bowls and fill them with nice tasting baking ingredients e.g. brown sugar, icing sugar, hundreds and thousands, coconut and let Billy do some mixing with spoons. It makes an awful mess but he loves doing his baking and he eats half of it as well! Bex Outside
- chalk and a footpath, the kids love drawing everywhere - sent in by Marion
- Outside Blackboards - We are currently landscaping out back yard...and I spotted some blackboards at a Day Care Centre I visited so investigated making some for our yard (figured the little kids and BIG kids would love these). So here is how... Get some tanalised plyboard (CD) from Mitre 10 or ITM etc 2.4m x 1.2m x .7m (do shop around as I managed to get mine from a Lumberlands and for $12 less than the big chains and they cut it for me!). I had it cut into three sheets (.8m x 1.2m). Then go to Resene for the following: 1 x 500ml tin of quick dry waterborne primer undercoat, 1 x 500ml tin of blackboard paint. CD with the ply means that one side is smooth and one side may have knots etc in it so.. gently sand the edges and the "smooth" side of the ply to ensure a nice smooth surface. Use the primer on the edges and the smooth side of the ply (you could prime the back as well if you want to leave the boards outside). Again gently sand the now primed suface (you may need to do a second coat of primer, if so, sand again once dry). Apply two coats of black board paint as per tin instructions. Now you are ready to hand your blackboards and chalk - try the $2 shop!!!! Can't beat that! You should be able to do all that including chalk for around $100! If you do not have a big yard or do not need three talk to your friends and maybe you can split the costs and share the outcome! - sent in by Norelle
